October 2022 Update
Let me catch you up to where we are today with a look back over the last few months… It’s a lot but that’s because we’ve been busy!
Thank you to everyone who has put in time and effort to review documents, provide feedback, share our work with colleagues, write testimony, and explore partnerships.

Building Our Coalition
In May we started a national search for committee members. Since then, we have:
- Formed a Steering Committee which includes several members who helped write the National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Report.
- Established seven working committees to address the seven goals outlined in the NASEM Report. We are pleased that each committee includes a nursing home resident and a CNA to ensure a holistic perspective on recommendations.
- Attracted nearly 300 individuals who have signed up as committee members, subject matter experts (SMEs), residents/family members, advocates, or as individuals interested in making a difference.
Committee Efforts
Our seven core committees have begun their work and are making great strides. The dedication and commitment of these committees has been remarkable in such a short time. A few things worth noting:
- Committee work is happening in four phases:
- Phase 1: Convene (June-Sept) – Ongoing
- Phase 2: Prioritize (Sept-Nov) – Happening Now
- Phase 3: Create Action Plans (Nov-March 2023)
- Phase 4: Test & Promote Action Plans (March 2023-May 2024)
- Next month will start Phase 3, when each committee will be submitting priority recommendations – a one-page outline of the recommendation(s) the committee will build an Action Plan around. Action Plans will flesh out how to bring that recommendation to reality – starting with testing its concept in partnership with nursing home staff and/or policymakers before broader promotion.
- YOUR FEEDBACK: We look forward to getting your feedback on these the priority recommendations once they are publicly available. The November 16th “Coalition Conversation” will be a great opportunity to learn more.
September Testimony Before Congress
Lastly, I wanted to share that our Coalition has sparked the interest of policymakers on Capitol Hill. I was honored to represent the Coalition and preview our work at the House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis last month, alongside two of our committee co-chairs, David Grabowski (Committee #4: Financing) and Jasmine Travers (Committee #2: Workforce).
This was a very good sign that we have Congressional members and staff interested in following our work and the ways that policy changes can impact quality.
The letter (Statement for the Record) that we submitted on behalf of the Coalition identified a key framework of issues that must be addressed to improve nursing home quality – based on the NASEM Report we are all working from. Thank you to the many advocates and leaders who also submitted testimony.
